The H1N1 influenza in 2013 has already arrived in Italy. They were the first cases, which have shown that the symptoms do not differ much from those classic seasonal flu: fever, body aches, headache, fatigue, lack of appetite and sometimes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Can occur in mild form, but frequently also has a course that reveals serious enough. In fact it can cause complications, especially related to the worsening of chronic diseases. This can result in pneumonia and respiratory failure. That is why it is important to immediately contact the care appropriate to avoid incurring serious consequences.

The incubation and symptoms

The H1N1 influenza virus can live on surfaces for a period of time ranging between 24 and 48 hours. In any case, already after some time their infectivity is reduced, due to exposure to the external environment. the incubation lasts from one to three days and people are contagious already during this period that precedes the onset of symptoms. In general, we can say that the infection can be from one day before the onset of symptoms until seven days later. The children can be a source of infection even longer.

The onset is sudden, with fever higher, chills, headache, intense, muscle aches and joints, which are mainly concentrated in the back. Within a few hours we add all the runny nose, watery eyes, a sore throat, intolerance to light, a burning sensation behind the breastbone, and coughing. There may also be nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Even the symptoms in children are the same, although smaller, not being able to describe the set of symptoms generally manifest their discomfort with crying and irritability. In infants fever is present only in exceptional circumstances, and in children from one to five years, in addition to high fever are also seen as conjunctivitis, bronchitis and laryngotracheitis.

The treatment of H1N1 influenza are based on symptomatic drugs, such as anti-inflammatory, the antipathetic and antiviruses. Particular attention should be paid to the use of antivirals. It in fact advisable to use the latter only for the treatment in those subjects who, because of health conditions already compromised, could face of complications. We must not overlook the fact that these drugs may also have the significant side effects, so you have to be quite careful. In any case, use them in a preventive way does not lead to any benefit, because the only form of prevention is the vaccine.
